SAND PAINTING - Island of Gorée, Senegal
The island of Gorée lies off the coast of Senegal, opposite Dakar. From the 15th to the 19th century, it was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast. It’s a beautiful island with a rich and dark history. However, this video is to show you the amazing artists I got to meet working on the island of Gorée. This was the first time I saw sand painting and I was fascinated by their effortless ways. In less than 5 minutes these Senegalese sand artists will show us how they create different portraits by pouring sands of different colours over a wooden board with glue on it. They import the different colours of sand they use from different African countries like Mali and Namibia. Of course I ended up buying 10 pieces and I currently have 5 pieces hanging on my living room wall.

2022/23 Métiers d'art CHANEL – DAKAR — CHANEL Shows
Introduced by Dimitri Chamblas’ choreographies and the harmonies of singer Obree Daman and his choralists, the 2022/23 Métiers d'art CHANEL – DAKAR show was held against the majestic backdrop of Dakar’s former Palais de Justice, with its rhythmic columns and sunlit inner garden. The collection celebrates the spirit of the 1970s with silhouettes with vibrating colours and richly ornate embroideries of beads and sequins, textured tweeds and floral motives. Silhouettes are finessed with beaded sautoirs layered with sparkling pendants and bold belt buckles adorned with Mademoiselle Chanel’s lion.
Imagined by Virginie Viard and crafted between the CHANEL Ready-to Wear ateliers in Paris and the Maisons d’art of 𝘭𝘦19M, the 2022/23 Métiers d'art CHANEL – DAKAR collection is the result of multiple...

Imagined by Virginie Viard and crafted between the CHANEL Ready-to Wear ateliers in Paris and the Maisons d’art of 𝘭𝘦19M, the 2022/23 Métiers d'art CHANEL – DAKAR collection is the result of multiple meetings over the past three years between Virginie Viard and artists of all backgrounds: the choreographer Dimitri Chamblas who called on Germaine Acogny’s École des Sables dancers, but also directors, musicians and writers, all together with friends of the House. The show is part of a vast cultural programme and the starting point of an ongoing exchange between the House and Senegal.

Île de Gorée or “Gorée Island”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site has a heart-breaking past with one of the saddest tragedies in human history, slave-trading. Today, Gorée is a commune in Dakar with a population of 1,600 and home to a vibrant art community. Art & Music are vital parts of the culture here. Moving on from the tragic past of slave-trading, the artists derive inspiration from everyday activities. The culture is well represented in their art-forms. One may find street sides with colourful painting galleries or sand artists flaunting their mastery over the different coloured sand grains. We met one such old-hand, who had a minimalistic stall made of bamboo canes. He had a collection of different shades of sand from different regions of the country. He made us a live sand art. Also his mastery in glue art had us awestruck.
